Margo Verstraete, DVM, graduated from Gent University and is pursuing a PhD in equine reproduction at Ghent University and UC Davis. Her research focuses on placental development using organoids as an in vitro model. She developed protocols for generating endometrial and placental organoids and characterized them on a structural, molecular, and functional level, using various techniques. The organoids show striking similarities to their in vivo counterparts, supporting their value in studying the (patho)physiology. For instance, endometrial organoids can be used to illuminate the interaction with the conceptus. Placental organoids hold great promise for advancing our understanding of equine placentitis.
